Afscheid nemen

Afgelopen zondag belde mijn oude vriend en kunstenaar Jan Snoeck. Hij vertrekt samen met zijn lieve vrouw Sara weer voor vele maanden naar Zuid–Frankrijk , waar ze samen het liefste zijn. Dinsdag gaan ze vertrekken. Ik besef dat ik even afscheid van ze wil nemen, een soort traditie elk jaar. ‘…..Kom morgen maar…..’ zegt Jan aan de telefoon. Ik besef dat we elkaar alweer bijna 25 jaar kennen. Ooit begonnen op zijn atelier in Den Haag, omdat ik zijn kunst zo bijzonder waardeer. Maar ik besef dat ik ook van Jan & Sara ben gaan houden.

Elk jaar als ik weer afscheid van ze neem – Jan is al 89 jaar oud en Sara  bijna ook – besef ik dat ik nooit weet of ik ze weer terug ga zien. Vandaag is echt dubbel. Ik haal vlakbij op de Laan van Nieuw Oost Indië – bij banketbakker Boheemen – het allerlekkerste gebak. Met lood in mijn schoenen ga ik naar hun huis. Onder mijn arm een keramiek oud werk van Jan, wat ik recent heb meegenomen uit zijn atelier. Ik vond het erg raak : een bank met stekels! That’s me….. Thuis werd Annemieke er extra verdrietig van, dus het moet terug vind ik.     We smullen van het gebak met koffie en het is gezellig. Na de koffie doe ik mijn verhaal. Jan & Sara zijn stil. Jan zegt ‘….maar ik ben al zo oud, het is toch oneerlijk….’ Sara houdt me extra vast bij het weg gaan. Jeetje, wat hou ik van ze. Ik wens ze een goede reis en hoop ze natuurlijk in het najaar weer in Nederland te zien. Toch bijzonder hoe ook Jan op zijn oude dag een transitie in zijn kunst door maakt : van keramiek naar bewerkte fotografie. Met een brok in mijn keel rijd ik weg.
